Octas
Appendix: Visitor Information
Welcome to Octas, visitors from other TTRPGs. We run things a little differently around here, but with just a little willingness to adapt, you can fit right in! The basics are not unlike where you came from, but here is a quick bullet-list of what to expect from the locals:
- Roleplay Focus - the default rules favour role-play over detailed combat mechanics.
- Destructive Stats - There is no concept of 'Health' or 'Hit-Points'. Damage to your character effects your primary stats directly! Your strength goes down as you take physical damage. Your mental abilities are degraded by magical attacks, as well as excessive use of magic by yourself.
- Skills-Based - There are no 'classes' or 'levels'. Specialisation and progression are via developing specific skills.
- No Experience - Progression of skills falls directly out of using them, rather than the earning and spending of 'experience points'.
- Octal Dice - The game uses two eight-sided dice, numbered zero to seven. Sometimes they are used in an additive manner, much like pairs of 6-sided dice. Sometimes they are used in a manner more like 'percentile' dual-ten-sided-dice, though in numeric base eight. The base-8 stuff is well-hidden: if you know your eight-times-tables up to seven you won't even notice!
- Original World, but Not Unfamiliar - The Octas/fallen genre module has plenty of classic mythical/fantasy tropes, but beware: they often have a spin that is slightly off-kilter to what you are used to!
- No 'good' or 'evil' - Entities in Octas are not inherently good or evil. Some species may be more or less aggressive, or territorial, or just plain hungry! However, this will still vary even within a species, and with circumstance. Individuals of any sapient species can behave very badly, but will still have some motivation for doing so beyond just 'be evil'. Everyone is justified in their actions, in their own mind, even the genuinely-insane ones!
